You know that precise moment when you expect one thing, then get something completely different? It’s that deliciously awkward moment of lost-ness just before you confirm all suspicions with that head tilt and raised eybrow… Of Montreal’s new album, Skeletal Lamping is kind of like that.
Skeletal Lamping offers a chaotic collection of music that boasts arrangements that are far from simple. Of Montreal’s typical lo-fi, bright indie pop with cheery chords and choruses, are replaced with cuts that progressively evolve- ending in a much different place than where they begin.
As frontman Kevin Barnes proclaims on Wicked Wisdom, he’s a mutherfuckin headline and you don’t even know it. Be it the enigmatic, sexual lyrics; strange onstage performances, or the layered audible enigmas, of Montreal brings something so unique and different with their ninth studio album, that Prince & David Bowie would be jealous of this one.
