Phish Rocks Super Ball IX

Phish Rocks Super Ball IX

One of the many things that Phish is known for is the their legendary weekend long festivals. The recently completed Super Ball IX in Watkins Glen, NY continued that tradition in amazing fashion.

For Super Ball IX Phish created a complete city inside the festival grounds with an array of dope features to delight all the senses including a ferris wheel and a human size hamster wheel.

The band was scheduled to play 7 sets over the course of the three day festival. All 7 scheduled sets reached high peaks and exemplified the many styles that Phish has encompassed throughout their 28 year career including long jams, slow funk &; well played cover songs from such artists as The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, David Bowie, Ac/DC, Led Zeppelin, &;amp many others.

For many attendees the highlight of the weekend was the unannounced "secret set" that took place at 1:30 a.m. on Sunday Morning. For this set Phish was playing behind opaque colored windows of a makeshift self-storage facility set up in the center of the main concert grounds. This area was surrounded by four speaker towers that allowed for the different instruments to be shifted from speaker to speaker causing a surreal surround sound effect. This et featured the normal Phish instrumentation as well as synthesizers and sampling machines. During the one hour set the band ran through many different themes of instrumental weirdness and eventually found there way to the only lyrical song of the set, "Sleeping Monkey". This was no ordinary version, but one that fit into the noisy synthed-out themes of the rest of the set.

All 8 sets from Super Ball IX are available for download at www.livephish.com.
